Around the Neighbourhood

Here at St Anns we are right in the centre of an amazing history of shipbuilding, mining, fishing and all kinds of commerce. Here are a few snapshots taken over the last couple of centuries or so. I recall that on this part of the Quay where the boats tied up with cargoes of oranges. The dockers always broke a crate or two and as kids we used to stuff them in our pockets, up our jumpers and in our hoods. They tasted great.

My dad used to bring Jaffa Oranges in for us when I was a kid as he used to paint the cranes he used to paint the cranes from the top of the quayside to the other then start again he knew all the dockers that was working on the quayside . I used to take my dads bait for him before I went to school Happy Days … The Ship is the Stormount it used to berth there every Friday till the Monday. The ship workers used to drink in the Free Trade. Used to sail back and forward to Amsterdam loading and dropping cargo off

Every Tuesday the Magnolia used to dock there.It came from Denmark with bacon and Lurpak butter in white wooden barrels.The other ship tat used to dock there was called the Olivian Coast.
